Microsoft delays policy banning third-party fees for free open source software

Microsoft updated its App Store rules last month to include a “don’t try to profit from open source or other software that is usually available for free, and don’t try to overprice the features and functionality a product offers.” Microsoft’s original intentions are believed to be well-intentioned, to curb the practice of repackaging free open source free software to turn it into paid software. However, the open source free software license does not prohibit such charging or commercialization, and Microsoft’s regulations will affect all open source free software in its application store. Its new rules were too vague and uncertain, and the Software Freedom Conservancy challenged them , and Microsoft responded by delaying enforcement.
