Microsoft is in talks to invest tens of billions of dollars in OpenAI, valuing the hot AI startup at $29 billion. OpenAI developed ChatGPT, a chatbot prototype, and Dall-E, a text-to-image authoring tool. Under the terms of the financing, once OpenAI finds a way to make money from products like ChatGPT, Microsoft will keep three-quarters of the profits until it recoups its initial investment. Microsoft will then own 49 percent of OpenAI, with other investors getting another 49 percent and OpenAI’s non-profit parent company getting 2 percent. Microsoft has previously invested $1 billion in OpenAI and plans to integrate ChatGPT functionality in its search engine Bing.
