Microsoft kills virtual reality and mixed reality teams

Microsoft’s latest wave of mass layoffs has killed entire teams working on virtual reality and mixed reality projects, effectively ending efforts in the Metaverse space. Microsoft acquired social virtual reality platform AltSpaceVR in 2017, and now it has cut off the entire team, and AltSpaceVR will shut down on March 10. Microsoft laid off the team that developed the mixed reality framework MRTK, which is currently focused on the mixed reality headset HoloLens. MRTK being cut has raised concerns about the future of HoloLens. HoloLens has been scaled down following the departure of chief architect Alex Kipman. Microsoft has been seeking a HoloLens contract with the military, but the U.S. Congress lowered the size of the contract due to related issues.
