Microsoft’s patch released last week caused blue screens of death on some Windows 10 machines

Microsoft released the December routine patch last Tuesday, but some Windows 10 users who installed the cumulative patch KB5021233 reported a blue screen of death. According to Microsoft, the problem may be caused by a file version mismatch between hidparse.sys in c:/windows/system32 and c:/windows/system32/drivers (assuming the operating system is installed on the C drive). The system will report 0xc000021a error when starting up, and a blue screen of death will occur. Affected versions include Windows 10 22H2, 21H2, 21H1, and 20H2. Microsoft is working on a fix. For systems that are currently unbootable, Microsoft recommends using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to repair.
