The latest figures from the Canadian Census Agency show that more than one-fifth of the population is an immigrant. There are still a lot of job openings in Canada, and the country has set a record-breaking immigration target for the next three years — attracting 1.45 million immigrants between 2023 and 2025. The Canadian government’s approach to immigration is radically different from that of Western governments such as Sweden and Italy, whose newly elected political parties advocate restrictions on immigration and blame immigration for crime and chaos. Canada has long pursued a strategy of recruiting immigrants to compensate for its ageing population and low birth rate, which has gained widespread public support. The country is prioritizing immigration of skilled workers in fields with severe labor shortages – including health care, manufacturing, engineering and trade. The majority of newcomers to Canada are from Asian and African countries, and the census agency projects that by 2041, one in four Canadians will be born in those continents.
