Doctor John Snow happens to have the same name as “Snow” in the famous British TV series “Game of Thrones”. But in the real world, Snow, as an outstanding doctor, would never complain about him “you know nothing”.
In addition to making important contributions to the control of the London cholera epidemic, Snow also promoted the development of anesthesia. In the mid-19th century, when Snow practiced medicine, anesthesia, one of the cornerstones of surgery, was invented. But for the British, it was still a novel and unfamiliar technology. Dr. Snow realized the importance of anesthesia technology early on. He not only introduced anesthesia to the UK, but also studied anesthesia technology in depth, defined the different stages of ether anesthesia, and invented a device that made it easier for patients to inhale anesthesia. When Queen Victoria gave birth to her eighth child, it was Dr. John Snow who performed painless childbirth for her, thus creating a new trend. He thus became one of the great pioneers of anesthesiology of the 19th century.
