Mozilla freezes some user-agent strings due to IE11

Two weeks ago, users reported a user-agent string (UA string) to Mozilla about a site compatibility issue. UA strings have been around since the 1990s, and websites can use this data to tweak performance and functionality, or block outdated browsers. The UA string for the upcoming Firefox 110 is Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:110.0 ) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/110, which users reported caused bestbuy.com to display an error message stating that the browser is not supported , which recommends users download the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge. The investigation found that the reason is the UA string of IE11 – Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/7.0; AS; rv:11.0) like Gecko. Firefox 110’s UA string contains rv:11 and is thus recognized by websites as IE11 which it no longer supports. Mozilla’s solution is to freeze version numbers, Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0 ) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/110.
