MSI Afterburner development stalls as Russian developers can’t get money

MSI’s graphics card overclocking tool MSI Afterburner is used for graphics card monitoring, overclocking and voltage reduction. But its developer said earlier this month on the app’s Guru3D discussion forum that MSI hasn’t been paid for nearly a year, and its development is half-abandoned. MSI Afterburner was developed by Russian developer Alexey ‘Unwinder’ Nicolaychuk, who also developed RivaTuner Statistics Server – which is part of the base software layer of MSI Afterburner. Unwinder said on the forum that due to war and political reasons, the project was half-abandoned, and MSI has not fulfilled the software license agreement for nearly a year—that is, paying development fees. He said that the development of MSI Afterburner has continued for the past 11 months, but he personally feels that it is a waste of time on something that MSI does not need. If he has free time, he may continue to support it, but in order to pay the bills he needs to do other things. The development of RivaTuner Statistics Server will continue. MSI confirmed that it stopped payments due to Russia’s war on Ukraine. However, MSI has different views on whether to abandon MSI Afterburner. It intends to continue to support the tool and is working on a solution.
