As a post-80s generation, apart from school and home, I had many opportunities to get in touch with nature when I was young. At that time, the surrounding area was mostly farmland, ponds, canals and rivers. My favorite outdoor activity in elementary school was to go fishing for lobsters in the pond with my friends, and occasionally I followed the adults to pick wild vegetables, and even planted rice (the kind that adds chaos) . I still remember that there was a small bamboo forest in the backyard of my grandmother, and a few chickens were raised in the forest. In summer, it is very pleasant to enjoy the cool breeze blowing in the bamboo forest. After entering junior high school, these farmlands, ponds, and canals gradually disappeared, replaced by various factories, and more and more people came to work, and the local people gradually became a minority group. When I was young, my family often said that if I didn’t study hard, I would go home to farm. Now I want to go home to farm, but there is no land left. Therefore, I have a deep understanding of the “human powerlessness in industrial society” mentioned by Kaczynski in his paper “On Industrial Society and Its Future”.
I think the ideal living environment should have a close connection with nature. Bai Juyi said in “Chishang Chapter” that a family should have “a house of ten acres and a garden of five acres. There is a pool of water and a thousand bamboo poles.” Looking at it now, it is extremely extravagant. But if you go to a remote place, or a suburban location in the city, it is still possible to implement a simple version.
Choosing where to live also determines the physical distance with relatives and friends, and the physical distance will directly affect the number of meetings. If you are not in the same city, there are very few opportunities to meet each year, and the emotional connection will also be weakened. . I used to feel sorry for those students who didn’t come out, and felt that it was more likely to display their talents and discover opportunities outside, but now I don’t think so.
Considering factors such as work, family, and friends, my ideal residence should be like this: it is an independent house, and if possible, I participate in the construction. There is a large yard where bamboo, vegetables and fruits can be planted, and cats and dogs can play. Friends and family members live in the same city, so it is very convenient to drop by when you have something to do. For work, you can drive there in half an hour (studio or company). If it is more concrete, it should be the residence of Shuichi and Yingzi in the fruit of life .
However, there is often a gap between ideals and reality, and it is difficult to satisfy these four factors at the same time. If you choose an independent house with a large yard, you may not be able to balance work, friends and family; if you choose work and friends, you will have to compromise on residence and family. I hope to one day find a residence that satisfies all four of these factors.
