NASA announced today that it will cooperate with SpaceX to launch the Polaris program to increase the lifespan of the Hubble Telescope.

The Polaris program will reportedly use the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft to lift NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to a higher orbit at no cost to NASA. The two sides had signed an unfunded Space Act agreement last week to study the viability of the SpaceX and Polestar program ideas.
The NASA team expects that the pre-orbital study to raise the Hubble telescope will take up to six months, collecting technical data from the Hubble and SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The data will help determine whether it is safe to rendezvous, dock and move the telescope to a more stable orbit. NASA and SpaceX hope to re-propel Hubble to a higher, more stable orbit, possibly adding more run time to it.
