NASA’s InSight probe concludes more than four years of exploring Mars. After two consecutive unsuccessful attempts to contact InSight, mission controllers at JPL concluded the probe’s batteries were dead. NASA has previously announced that if the probe misses two contact attempts, it will declare the mission over. NASA will continue to monitor the signal, but considers it unlikely that communication will be restored. InSight last communicated with Earth on Dec. 15. InSight is the abbreviation of Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, which aims to study the deep structure of Mars. The highly sensitive seismometer it carried detected a total of 1,319 Martian earthquakes, including those caused by meteor impacts.
