Researchers at security firm Lumen have discovered a never-before-seen cross-platform malware that infects Windows and Linux devices, including small office routers, FreeBSD boxes and large enterprise servers. The researchers named the malicious program Chaos because the word appears repeatedly in the malicious program’s function names, certificates, and file names. It may have appeared as early as April 16, and infected hundreds of devices in the months that followed. Chaos is unique in that it is designed to support ARM, Intel(i386), MIPS and PowerPC architectures, supports Windows and Linux operating systems, it only spreads through known CVE vulnerabilities, using brute force and stolen SSH keys. Chaos infections are mainly concentrated in Europe.
