Until June 12, 2022, you can visit the Van Gogh and the Olive Groves exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which features Vincent van Gogh’s olive grove theme for the first time The paintings are reassembled and displayed. Taking this opportunity, we present one of these paintings today.
What did Van Gogh think was special about olive trees? The olive tree is full of highly personal, comforting symbolism for the artist. They represent the old and unchanging Provencal landscape, but they also remind him of pruned willows in the Netherlands. Since ancient times, the olive tree has been a symbol of peace and patience. In the Bible, Christ sought comfort in the Garden of Olives the night before his arrest.
Van Gogh received letters from his artist friends Emile Bernard and Paul Gauguin in November 1889 about their biblical scenes, including Christ in the Garden of Olives ). He was outraged that these works were completely imaginary. In response, he went straight back to his olive grove. Unlike the “abstract” of his friends, Van Gogh drew inspiration from nature. He painted five olive tree scenes at different times of the day to capture the effects of changing light and atmosphere. As before, he strives to express the hope and comfort he associates with the olive tree.
In this late autumn olive grove, Van Gogh used a series of dots and lines to run a series of individual colors. This technique brings a sense of unity and rhythm to the image. “You will find no more heavy paint in large studies,” he wrote to his brother, “which gives atmosphere and uses less paint.”
