Smart Island is a hot update for this year’s iPhone. In the early days, we saw a lot of gameplay for Smart Island, such as raising pets around the island, playing games with Smart Island, and adapting to Smart Island’s hole-digging wallpaper.
However, these gameplays do not use the real “Smart Island Interface” from the system and functional level. In Apple’s developer documentation, Smart Island is actually a “live activity”. In some scenarios where users need to pay attention to state changes in real time, display information for users. For example, real-time update of game data, real-time update of takeaway progress, real-time update of timer, real-time update of map navigation guidance, etc.
If the iOS 16.1 system is installed on the iPhone, on the iPhone 14 Pro model, the real-time activity can be displayed on the Smart Island and the lock screen; on non-iPhone 14 Pro models, it is only displayed on the lock screen.
How does OneWidget locate Smart Island?
After perusing Apple’s developer documentation, we found that there is a lot of overlap between how the live activity is implemented and the widget. At the same time, whether on the lock screen or in the “expanded” Smart Island position, its size is very similar to a medium-sized desktop widget. Furthermore, real-time activities cannot interact, animate, and refresh at any time, which are too similar to widgets. So, we ended up positioning real-time activity as “a special kind of widget”.
When we define “Smart Island” as a “real-time display widget”, then everything is simpler, in principle, it can be achieved by widgets. It’s just that we need to think more about why users should expand and use it in the two special positions of the lock screen and the smart island.
How does OneWidget do the smart island function?
In the more than 2 years of iterating the product, OneWidget’s various types of widgets have received a lot of good feedback from users. When we review these widgets, users care about three key words: practicality, beauty, and fun. Therefore, when designing the special small component of Smart Island, what we should do is also practical, beautiful and interesting. In addition, for many users, beauty and fun are also a kind of practical value. Beauty brings personalized decoration, and fun brings early adopters of functions.
From a practical and convenient point of view, we have designed “Startup Island” and “Health Island”.
From a beauty and fun standpoint, we designed “Pet Island” and “Rotten Island”.
How to open Smart Island?
If the iPhone is updated to iOS 16.1 or later, after downloading OneWidget version 3.6.0 or later, you can enter the personal center to find the main entrance. On the Smart Island configuration page, select the “island” that needs to be enabled. When the app enters the background or switches to another app, the real-time activity is already enabled on the lock screen interface and Smart Island area.
We also designed some details separately for the configuration entrance: the moving sea level, the color prompt box after opening, the preview effect, etc.
pet island
Users can adopt an electronic pet of their own on the “Pet Island”. It will play with you every day, be hungry, sleepy, and thirsty. In different states, users need to click on different operations. We named the pet “Island Island”. After adoption, the number of days of adoption will be displayed in the app. In addition to different states, Shimashima may also go out to play, and only when he comes back can he interact with him again. In order to meet the personalization, the pet “Island Island” also allows custom colors, and now we support the switching of 7 colors.
start island
“Startup Island” allows users to add an entry to quickly launch an app or a small program, which resides in the lock screen interface and smart island. Users can add common startup entries from 1 to 6. According to the number of additions, the icons and spacing will be automatically adjusted to suit the appropriate layout. Along with lock screen widgets and desktop widgets, the launcher entry here supports adding commonly used apps, secondary paths of WeChat and Alipay, and applet entry of WeChat and Alipay.
rotten island
“Island of Rotten” will randomly display some “anti-chicken soup” illustrations and copywriting. In order to satisfy the “interestingness” of this function, roll it up when it’s time to roll, and lie down when it’s time to lie down. Occasionally it’s okay to be rotten, rest is human nature.
healthy island
“Health Island” displays the user’s health data on the day in real time, such as the number of steps, exercise time, energy consumption, height, weight, etc. Especially for the data that will be updated and changed every day, it is possible to view the updated data (but the current system refresh problem, there will be more delays).
