OpenAI releases tool to detect machine-generated text

OpenAI, the developer of the AI chatbot ChatGPT, has released a free web tool (login or registration required) for monitoring machine-generated text to help teachers and others determine whether a piece of text was written by a machine or a human. OpenAI cautiously stated that the tool is not perfect, there are false positives and false negatives, and it cannot be used alone to determine the authorship of a document. The tool gives results for the analyzed text on a five-point scale: Very unlikely to be AI-generated, Impossible, Unclear, Likely, and Very likely. The tool performs best on texts over 1,000 words and texts written in English.
