Ikeda Shōen was one of the few famous and successful female artists of the Meiji period (1868-1912). Jiaoyuan was first a student of the famous printmaker and painter Mizuno Nianfang, and later he studied under the famous Japanese landscape painter Kawana Yutang. In both studios student artist Teru Fang Ikeda became her husband and colleague. Sadly, both artists died untimely within a few years, with Jiaoyuan dying of pleurisy and tuberculosis. She specializes in depicting beautiful women, often with youthful soft features and flowing robes.
Due to her early death, there are relatively few paintings of hers. But today we present one of her beautiful woodblock prints. It’s beautiful isn’t it? It looks modern; like a screenshot from a Studio Ghibli movie.
PS Ladies and gentlemen, meet another Meiji-era female artist: Noguchi Xiaoping . <3
