At an investor meeting this week, Sony admitted that PS5 sales fell short of expectations. However, Sony emphasized that it is not that players are unwilling to buy, but that the lack of production capacity makes it impossible for everyone to ask for it.

It’s hard to say what the real reason is. Leaving this aside, Sony also pronounced the PS4’s “death date” in 2025.

Sony said that it will no longer make first-party games for PS4 in 2025, which means that the company’s energy will be fully shifted to the PS5 platform.

Although it did not sell well, Sony said that players on the PS5 platform surpassed the PS4 in terms of retention rate, game time and krypton gold. According to the current transition plan, Sony is even optimistic that PS5 sales (currently 19.3 million units) will overtake PS4 (currently 117.2 million units) in 2024.

However, some game media are pessimistic about this, because currently, PS4 players still contribute the main income to the PS store, and as many as 69% of PlayStation Plus subscribers come from PS4.
