2022 is the second year for me to track pumped storage projects in my country, and it is also the year when pumped storage is ready to go. During the tracking process, I not only learned some knowledge about pumped storage, but also learned a lot about pumped storage power station projects. The process has a preliminary understanding. Gossip less, let the book return to the main story, let golfers enjoy the prelude to the movement of pumped storage in the development of new energy in our country.

The entire implementation process of a pumped storage project, as a layman, can generally be divided into: (1) preliminary site planning stage, (2) pre-feasibility study stage, (3) feasibility study stage, (4) approval ( (pre-approval) stage, (5) construction start stage, (6) all units put into operation (post-acceptance). There may be short-term overlaps in some phases, but most of the project operation process is still very standardized. By understanding these stages, we can take stock of the general situation of pumped storage in my country in 2022 according to the project progress. (Remarks: All the sorted information comes from the Internet and related company websites. I just did a preliminary sorting, and it is inevitable that there are mistakes. Please correct me.)

1. Pumped storage projects to be completed and put into operation in 2022 (10 with an installed capacity of 12.055 million kilowatts )

1. State Grid Xinyuan (5, 6.8 million kilowatts): Phase II of Fengning, Hebei, Huanggou, Heilongjiang, Dunhua, Jilin, Jinzhai, Anhui, and Yimeng, Shandong;

2. South Power Grid energy storage (2, 2.4 million kilowatts): Guangdong Meizhu Phase I and Yangjiang Phase I;

3. Three Gorges Construction: Zhejiang Changlong Mountain 2.1 million kilowatts

4. Huadian Group: 1.2 million kilowatts of pumped storage in Zhouning, Fujian

5. China Power Construction: Sichuan Xiaojinzhaichun Changba 05,000 kilowatts (full power variable speed constant frequency, test project)

2. Projects started in previous years and still under construction before 2022 (28 projects with an installed capacity of 38.23 million kilowatts )

1. State Grid Xinyuan (24, 32.93 million kilowatts): Shandong 3 (Wendeng, Weifang, Taian Phase I); Zhejiang 3 (Ninghai, Jinyun, Qujiang); Shanxi 2 (Hunyuan, Yuanqu) Hebei 2 (Yixian, Funing); Henan 2 (Tianchi, Luoning); Xinjiang 2 (Fukang, Hami Tianshan Township); Chongqing 2 (Paulong, Liziwan), Jilin Jiaohe, Liaoning Qingyuan, Inner Mongolia Zhirui , Jurong, Jiangsu, Tongcheng, Anhui, Xiamen, Fujian, Pingjiang, Hunan, Anyuehe Town, Shaanxi;

2. The remaining projects (4, 5.3 million kilowatts) are (1) Huayuan Power: Hebei Shangyi; (2) Xinhua Hydropower: Henan Wuyue; (3) Fujian Provincial Investment: Yongtai Pumped Storage; (4) Three Gorges Construction Worker: Zhejiang Tiantai;

3. In 2022, pumping storage will start construction projects (37, with an installed capacity of about 49.898 million kilowatts ), and most of them will start in the second half of the year.

1. State Grid Xinyuan (9, 12.8 million kilowatts): Zhejiang 3 (Pan’an, Taishun, Tonglu Baiyun Mountain); Heilongjiang Shangzhi, Liaoning Zhuanghe, Henan Songxian, Jiangxi Fengxin, Hubei Ziyun Mountain , Hunan Anhua;

2. South Grid energy storage (4, 4.8 million kilowatts): Guangdong 3 (Meiju Phase II, Langjiang, Huizhou Zhongdong), Guangxi Nanning Wuming;

3. Other central enterprises (14, 17.698 million kilowatts) except power grid companies are shown in the figure below:

4. Newly approved and unconstructed pumped storage projects in 2022 (23 with an installed capacity of 34.1 million kilowatts )

5. In 2022, the pumped storage projects will enter the feasible stage (40, with an installed capacity of 49.298 million kilowatts ). The projects entering this stage can basically start construction later.

6. Pumped storage projects entering the pre-feasibility study stage in 2022: 119, showing a pre-installed capacity of 151 million kilowatts .

7. 2022 pre-reconnaissance planning pumping and storage sites: 206, showing a pre-installed capacity of 280 million kilowatts , and there are still many sites that have not yet announced their pre-installed capacity.

Eight, to sum up:

1. In 2022, I have inquired about 600 pumping and storage stations across the country, with a total installed capacity (including pre-installed capacity) of 650 million kilowatts (including 34 projects that have been completed and put into operation before 2022, 33.75 million kilowatts ).

2. We can estimate the pumped storage installed capacity in 2030 as:

(1) Built before 2022: 33.75 million kilowatts;

(2) Completed and put into operation in 2022: 12.055 million kilowatts;

(3) Projects that have been started but not put into operation before 2022: 38.23 million kilowatts;

(4) Projects to be started in 2022: 49.898 million kilowatts;

(5) Unconstructed projects approved in 2022: 34.1 million kilowatts;

(6) Entering the feasible stage in 2022, it is estimated that 50% (slapping the head) can be built: 25 million kilowatts;

The total installed capacity of the above six items in China will reach 193 million kilowatts by then. In August 2021, my country’s pumped-storage installed capacity planning document requires that it will reach 120 million kilowatts by 2030. Now it seems that more than 50% of the plan will be completed. By 2035, if the site capacity of the remaining feasible stage (24 million kilowatts) and the pre-feasibility study stage (151 million kilowatts) are added, it will reach at least 368 million kilowatts. The supporting role of such an installed capacity on green power is for golfers to see different people and wise people to see their wisdom.

The possible unforeseen factors are (1) tightening of planning in the later stage, (2) insufficient qualified construction team, (3) insufficient production, manufacturing and installation capacity of units;
