Ransomware gangs target Japan

The fronts of the global ransomware war extend to Asia . Ransomware gangs operate mainly in Eastern European regions such as Russia and Belarus, and previously they primarily targeted the United States and Europe, but as these markets become saturated with criminal activity, victims’ ability to respond increases, and the rate of return on attacks decreases. By contrast, Asia is fresh pasture, while wealthy Japan generally has lower cyber defense capabilities and a higher willingness to pay ransoms. There used to be language barriers to attacking Japanese institutions, but with the advancement of AI translation tools and the help of professional translators, Japanese is no longer a hurdle. The result is a dramatic increase in ransomware attacks in Japan, with 146 public reports for 2021, which may be a fraction of the true number.
