why read this book
This book is one of the three books recommended by a reading group I joined when they organized a joint reading of the history of religions in June this year. The other two are “History of Indian Buddhism” ( my impressions after reading it ) and “Lecture Notes on the History of Zen Thought”. I read this book at the same time as I was reading History of Buddhism in India. Comparing the two, although this book is larger, with about 780,000 words, it is easier and easier to read than “History of Indian Buddhism”.
