Today we continue our thematic month with this unexpected painting from the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland . With it, we are ready for winter!

The placid skater is believed to be the Reverend Robert Walker, vicar of Friarsgate Church and a member of the Edinburgh Skating Association. The club is the oldest of its kind in the UK and usually meets on the frozen lakes of Deddingston or Lochende, on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Walker’s stance as he skates across the ice may seem effortless, but other skaters would consider it a difficult and complex maneuver. This small painting shows a figure in action and is quite different from other known portraits created by Rayburn.
