Russia blocks Chess.com

Russia’s communications regulator, Roscomnadzor, has blocked Chess.com, a well-known chess website. Since the outbreak of the war, Roscomnadzor has blocked thousands of websites , including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google News, BBC News, NPR, Amnesty International and Deutsche Welle. Roscomnadzor’s goal was to block two pages on Chess.com, On The Invasion of Ukraine, which outlines war-related policies and actions, and Ukrainian Chess Players In Times Of War, which interviews Ukrainian chess players. However, since Chess.com has HTTPS enabled, Roscomnadzor cannot block individual pages, only the entire site. Chess.com’s app is not affected, and it recommends Russian members to use the app or bypass the block with a VPN.
