Russia’s Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadaev said on Tuesday that the country does not plan to block YouTube because the move would affect Russian users. YouTube has 90 million monthly active users in Russia, and while there are many alternatives to popular Western social media in Russia, there is no alternative on a scale close to YouTube. Russia has previously restricted access to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and has tested trials to cut off global internet access. Shadaev dismissed speculation that Russia might be considering cutting off access to the global internet, saying Russia does not want to be isolated from anyone and should remain part of the global network.
