Salesforce abruptly announced on Nov. 30 that co-CEO Brett Taylor was stepping down and leaving the cloud software company to “get back to his entrepreneurial roots.” The decision makes Marc Benioff the sole leader of the $160 billion company.

Taylor, a former Facebook executive, was named co-CEO of Salesforce a year ago. His resignation came as a “deep shock” within the company, with speculation surrounding the reasons for the change and Taylor’s next steps.

In a message to employees, Benioff said he was grateful Taylor would stay on until the end of Salesforce’s fiscal year on January 31, 2023. “I will always be Brett’s biggest supporter and he will always be part of the Salesforce ‘family,'” Benioff wrote.

Shares of Salesforce fell nearly 7 percent in after-hours trading on Nov. 30 after the company announced news of the leadership change and its quarterly earnings report. Salesforce topped analysts’ forecasts for revenue and profit, but issued business forecasts that were less than ideal.

A Salesforce insider said there was “no idea” there was going to be a leadership change. Another insider said he was shocked by the news.

Taylor joined Salesforce after its productivity software startup Quip was acquired by Salesforce in 2016. Salesforce promoted Taylor from president and chief operating officer to co-CEO a year ago.

Taylor’s resignation from Salesforce is the second major change he has undergone in recent memory. Taylor stepped down as chairman of Twitter’s board following Elon Musk’s dramatic takeover of Twitter.

Inside Twitter, the news also sparked some speculation about whether Taylor would become the head of the social networking service. Musk is currently serving as Twitter’s CEO on an interim basis.

Taylor said in a statement: “I am grateful for six fantastic years at Salesforce. Mark was a mentor and friend to me long before I joined Salesforce and had the opportunity to partner with him to lead the world’s most important software company. The pinnacle of my career. After careful consideration, I have decided to return to my entrepreneurial roots. Salesforce is always customer-focused, has the best management team, and the company is running normally, so now is the right time for me to leave. “

In a message to employees, Benioff said their “priority” was to continue to “work together and support” the company’s sales force in a “strong fourth quarter.” (Fortune Chinese website)
