Scientific and technological innovation explores the frontier of new energy technology, BAIC’s first hydrogen internal combustion engine successfully ignited

Continuing to explore the frontier field of new energy vehicles, BAIC Group has made new progress in technological innovation. Recently, BAIC’s first hydrogen internal combustion engine was successfully ignited in the internal combustion engine laboratory of Beijing University of Technology. As a “zero-carbon” power, hydrogen internal combustion engines will provide more possibilities for the development of the new energy vehicle industry.

School-enterprise joint development of “zero carbon” power

The project is jointly developed by BAIC Research Institute and Beijing University of Technology. The experimental results show that the thermal efficiency of the prototype has exceeded 43% after the first ignition, and it can reach 45% after optimization, reaching the domestic leading level. This hydrogen internal combustion engine is based on the “Magic Core” 1.5T, which won the “China Heart” Top Ten Engines. Key technologies such as hydrogen valves and valve seats have laid a good foundation for the subsequent performance optimization of hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines.

In 2021, BAIC Motor will officially launch the 1.5T engine of the magic nuclear power platform, which will be installed on the new generation of its own product – Beijing Rubik’s Cube. The industry’s first mass-produced VGT supercharger technology not only allows Magic Nuclear Power to have a maximum power of 138 kW and a maximum torque of 305 Nm, but also becomes the “ceiling” of NVH performance of products of the same level, with an idle noise of only 57.5dB.

It is understood that after the BAIC hydrogen internal combustion engine is put into mass production, it will be mounted on commercial vehicles in fixed line usage scenarios within the BAIC Group for demonstration operations. At the same time, the product will also be installed in the extended-range hybrid passenger car developed by the Group.

Fruitful achievements in the field of green technology

The successful ignition of the first hydrogen internal combustion engine is another green scientific and technological achievement after BAIC Group released the “BLUE Plan” in June this year. According to the plan, BAIC Group will make every effort to achieve carbon peaking in 2025, and achieve full decarbonization of products and carbon neutrality in operations in 2050.

In the field of hydrogen power, as early as during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Beiqi Foton provided the first batch of hydrogen fuel cell bus service events on the road in China. In 2019, the “Key Technologies and Applications of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses” jointly developed by Beiqi Foton, Tsinghua University and Beijing Yihuatong won the first prize of the “China Automotive Industry Science and Technology Progress Award”. In the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, 515 Foton Ouhui hydrogen fuel buses achieved “zero error” escort, setting a record for the largest scale and the largest number of models in the history of hydrogen fuel buses serving international sports events. In the first half of this year, Beiqi Foton hydrogen-fueled light trucks and hydrogen-fueled heavy trucks have been delivered to the market in large quantities, which are used in cold chain logistics and sand and gravel mixture scenarios.

In the field of pure electric power, BAIC also has a deep technical accumulation. The achievement of “Key Technologies and Industrialization of Electric Vehicle Three-electric Platform” developed by BAIC won the first prize of China Automobile Industry Science and Technology Progress Award. In terms of high-efficiency electric drive assembly, the efficiency of the electric drive assembly under NEDC cycle conditions has increased to 87.5%, and the energy recovery rate of the entire vehicle is up to 25.5%, leading the industry. In terms of high-safety battery electronic control, it is the first time in the industry to realize the functional safety forward design of three-electrical electronic control products, and is the first to obtain the ASIL C functional safety product certification. In terms of efficient testing of key technologies, we independently developed the only automated testing tool and platform covering the entire testing process in the automotive industry, and carried out industry promotion through the China Automotive Technology Research Center. This achievement solves the key issues of battery life, safety, and cost concerns, and has been applied to mass-produced models such as Jihu Automobile.

Strong R&D system endorses innovation

Continuous technological progress stems from the well-established R&D system of BAIC Group.
