Removing cobalt from batteries will not only lower the cost of batteries, but also lower the price of electric vehicles, the report said. The battery pack is the most expensive part of an EV, accounting for 30% to 40% of the vehicle. In addition to cobalt-free batteries, SK On is currently developing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, both of which are likely to be supplied to mid- and low-end electric vehicles.
At present, in addition to SK On, companies such as Panasonic and Tesla are seeking to develop a cobalt-free battery. In January 2021, Shawn Watanabe, head of Panasonic’s energy technology and manufacturing division, said at the Consumer Electronics Show that within two to three years from then, the company would be able to launch a high-energy-density battery that does not contain cobalt.
