Watched three doomsday movies recently: Snowpiercer (2013), Finch (2021), and I Am Legend (2007).
Snowpiercer
Feng Junhao’s work, I didn’t expect it to be so international, and there are only two Asian faces in the main actors: Song Kanghao and Gao Yaxing. This reminds me of Bong Joon-ho’s other work, The Monster of the Han River, where they also star.
There are three impressive places in the film:
- The metaphor of the train to the social class, from the rear of the train to the front, the environment is getting better and better, the resources are getting more and more, and the living standard is getting higher and higher. A train is a long, narrow space, too apt.
- Curtis came to the front of the train as a revolutionary in the last car and talked to Wilford, the train manager, but found that his revolution was only part of Wilford’s plan, such as controlling the population and choosing him as his successor. Regardless of the issue of values, this fully reflects that people are the product of the environment (especially the information they receive), people think they see everything, but they don’t know what they don’t know. In modern society, the Internet has made access to information more convenient, exacerbating the illusion of “seeing everything”.
- There are many interpretations of getting out of the train. I think it is essentially an expansion. Stop rolling on the train and go back to the earth. Maybe one day, stop rolling on the earth and go to the space.
Finch
This movie is too cast-less, one person, plus a dog and a robot. But the only actor is big enough: Tom Hanks. (There is also a mother and daughter, only a few shots in the memory)
Although it is also a doomsday movie, there is no grand narrative and no sharp conflict. The film’s entry point is very small:
As one of the few survivors of the apocalypse, Finch suffers from cancer and knows he will die soon, so he makes a robot (Jeff) to take care of the dog (Goodyear, good year). The film focuses on Jeff getting along with Finch and Goodyear. In the process, Jeff developed human feelings, such as learning to trust.
So, Doomsday is just the background, and the movie is very heartwarming. From the moment they arrived at a place where the ultraviolet rays were not so strong and they could get off the car and feel the sun, it was full of tears.
- Finch dances with butterflies
- Sitting under a sun umbrella and telling a story
- After Finch died, Goodyear picked up the tennis ball Jeff threw and began to recognize Jeff
- Jeff posted a picture of them on the Golden Gate Bridge
- …
The most regrettable part of the movie is that Finch died on the road and failed to see the scenery of the Golden Gate Bridge. The end of one’s life is the end of the world for one’s life, so enjoy the gift of nature while you are alive.
I am a legend
Starring Will Smith.
The movie has two endings that differ only in the last few minutes:
- Ending 1: Robert (Will Smith) returned the captured female Night Demon to the Night Demon leader (it should be her father…), and then the Night Demon leader left with all the Night Demons without killing Robert. Then, Robert and Anne go to the human survivors gathering area.
- Ending 2: Robert drew a tube of blood (containing ingredients to cure the virus) from the female Night Demon and gave it to Annie, and then killed the Night Demon with a grenade. In the end, Annie took the blood to the human gathering area.
After watching it, I think both endings are quite ordinary, nothing special, just an ordinary doomsday movie. Until I read some of the reviewers’ explanations for ending one:
The Night Demon didn’t kill Robert. Robert looked at the Night Demon who died by his own experiment (in order to find the virus antidote) on the wall. Robert realized that for the Night Demon, hunting them was the alternative and dangerous existence. . So he chose to leave with Annie and go to the human gathering area. Since then, humans and night demons have had their own ways.
Then I went to replay the first ending. When the Daredevil left, Robert was sitting on the ground, and he did look at the wall full of Daredevil photos. The director also gave these photos a close-up. This explanation seems to make sense, just very covertly.
If you follow this interpretation, it is a bit of a cow. It illustrates a possibility: the earth is ruled by human artificial species, and human beings retreat to a gathering area to survive.
But, with human nature, it will definitely come back and regain control of the earth.
