Sound Blaster founder dies

Singaporean entrepreneur, innovative technology founder and computer sound system pioneer Sim Wang Fu died on January 4 at the age of 67. Shen Wangfu may not be a household name today, he founded Creative Technology in 1981, the company launched the earliest consumer sound card, the Sound Blaster, at a time when if you wanted to listen to music and play games, you needed to make sure your computer system had a Sound Blaster. The popularity of the Sound Blaster, which provided audio for more than 400 million PCs, ended when motherboard-integrated sound cards ended. Shen’s company also launched an MP3 player that tried to challenge Apple’s iPod. Creative sued Apple for patent infringement in 2006, and the two companies later reached a settlement in which Apple paid Creative $100 million.
