IT House News on January 9th, SK On demonstrated its battery charging technology at CES 2023. The South Korean battery maker claims that its technology aims to reduce the charging time of electric vehicle batteries to 18 minutes, which is faster than current electric vehicles. The car’s typical 30-minute charging time was cut in nearly half.

According to SK On’s official website, the company received a request from a global automaker in 2018 to make an electric vehicle (EV) battery that could be quickly charged in 18 minutes, and the company agreed to the manufacturer’s request. request, and developed the SF battery (Super Fast Battery), which SK On demonstrated at this year’s CES 2023 and won the Best Innovation Honor Award in the “Embedded Technology” category.

It is reported that the key to fast charging is about reducing the anode resistance when lithium is inserted in the case of charging. To achieve this goal, SK On applied its unique coating technology that greatly reduces electrical resistance and came up with a new battery material that increases charging speed. The company also applied a manufacturing solution that minimized the use of SBR, a binder that causes cell resistance during the coating process.

Generally speaking, fast charging will shorten the life of the battery. For example, if the warranty standard for an electric vehicle battery is set at 1000 cycle life, then the standard for fast charging is set at 400 cycles.

But for SF batteries, the battery life is not affected by fast charging, and the cycle life can reach 1,000 times. SK On said this is the result of the company’s rigorous testing.

SK On completed the development of the SF battery in 2019. In 2021, an electric vehicle equipped with the SF battery will debut on the market. The company now aims to make a battery that can be quickly charged within 10 minutes.
