Sandro Botticelli’s Spring is undoubtedly one of the most famous masterpieces in the world. It has been called “one of the most talked about and controversial paintings in the world” and “one of the most popular paintings in Western art”. All this is true. It depicts a group of figures from classical mythology in a garden, but why these figures were brought together is unclear. Maybe it’s an allegory based on springtime lush growth, maybe the scene involves Renaissance Neoplatonism – maybe, we’ll never know. What is certain is that the painting is a celebration of love, peace and prosperity.

Who do we see in the painting? On the right in the foreground, Zephyrus embraces a goddess named Cloris before taking her away; she is depicted after her transformation into Flora, the goddess of spring. At the center of the painting is Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, modestly dressed and positioned slightly back from the others, and a blindfolded Cupid shooting his arrow of love. On the left, the Trinity of Graces, the minor goddesses with Venusian virtues, dance in a circle. The composition ends with Mercury, the messenger of the gods, recognizable by his helmet and winged sandals, stroking a cloud with his staff.

happy spring! ?
