Lise Tréhot, Renoir’s mistress for many years, played various roles for him. On the one hand the portrait follows the Romantic tradition: the figure’s blouse slid from her shoulders – but not erotic – is covered by jet-black curly hair, and she maintains a frontal stretched pose, but avoids any Audience eye contact. On the other hand, the strong plasticity of form also reflects Courbet’s influence on him. The sunlight rendered by the broad brushstrokes flickered on the leaves in the background, and the sunlight did not reach the seated person, and she was only illuminated by the lights in the studio.
