Recently, the International Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) officially announced the 2022 ACL Fellow list, and a total of 8 well-known natural language processing scholars were selected.

Among them, Professor Sun Maosong from Tsinghua University was selected as the only Chinese scholar. The reasons for being selected are: to make significant contributions to China’s NLP and provide continuous services to the development of China’s computational linguistics.

Professor Sun Maosong is the tenth Chinese scholar elected in the history of ACL Fellow after Wang Haifeng, CTO of Baidu, and Li Hang, director of ByteDance AI Lab.

The ACL Fellow program started in 2011 and aims to recognize ACL members (ACL members) who have made outstanding contributions to scientific and technological research and community services in the field of natural language processing. It is one of the highest honors in the NLP field. To be elected as an ACL Fellow, a candidate must have been an ACL member for three of the past five years and be nominated by a current ACL member. Except for 2011, no more than 10 ACL Fellows are selected each year, so this honor is full of gold.

In addition to Professor Sun Maosong, the selected scholars of ACL Fellow in 2022 include: Hinrich Schütze (University of Munich), Marti Hearst (University of California, Berkeley), Claire Garden (Lorraine Computer Science and Its Applied Research Laboratory, French National Research Institute Center), James F. Allen (University of Rochester), Owen Rambow (Stony Brook University), Yejin Choi (University of Washington, Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence), Tomek Strzalkowski (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute)

Professor Sun Maosong is currently the executive vice president of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence of Tsinghua University, the chairman of the Computer Degree Evaluation Subcommittee of Tsinghua University, the deputy director of the Online Education Research Center of the Ministry of Education, the director of the Large-Scale Online Open Education Research Center of Tsinghua University, and the chief of the National 973 Program Scientist, chief expert of major projects of National Social Science Foundation of China.

He received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the Computer Department of Tsinghua University in 1986 and 1988 respectively, and has been working there since then. In 2004, he received his PhD in Computational Linguistics from City University of Hong Kong. From 1999 to 2003, he served as the deputy director of the Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua University. In 2000 and 2001, he was employed as a visiting associate professor at the University of Hong Kong. In 2020, Sun Maosong was elected as a foreign academician of the European Academy of Sciences.

He has made significant contributions in the field of natural language processing. His research areas cover natural language understanding, Chinese information processing, Web intelligence, social computing and computational pedagogy, etc., in Chinese word segmentation and part-of-speech tagging, keyword extraction and social tagging, representation learning, knowledge graph, machine translation and poetry generation, etc. He has published a series of high-level papers in top international academic conferences and first-class journals, and has been cited by Google Scholar more than 28,000 times.

One of Sun Maosong’s research focuses is the most basic topic in Chinese information processing: Chinese automatic word segmentation. He developed a word segmentation and tagging system CSegTag that integrates automatic word segmentation, part-of-speech tagging, proper name recognition and neologism recognition, which was applied to the European Union Sixth Framework Program (FP6) project “Super pair and other semantic search engines”.

In 2013, Sun Maosong led the Tsinghua University team to successfully develop the first domestic Chinese MOOC platform “Xuetangx”. After rapid development, “Xuetangx” has now formed a wide range of influence at home and abroad.

In 2015, the artificial intelligence poetry writing system “Nine Songs” developed by the THUAIPoet team led by Sun Maosong was launched. The system uses the latest deep learning technology and combines multiple models specially designed for poetry generation, based on more than 800,000 human poets. The poems he created have been trained and studied, which has attracted widespread attention in the academic and industry circles.
