On the evening of May 31, Tencent internally sent a notification email about employee salary review adjustments, announcing that the current salary review time for Tencent employees would be adjusted, and the link between rank promotions and salary adjustments was canceled.
Tencent’s annual salary review, which usually focuses on June, will be postponed to July this year. The reason given in the email is: to make the salary review more closely match the performance evaluation of the first half of the year, and to solve the problem that the latest performance results could not be obtained when the salary review was conducted in the past six months.
However, the email did not specify whether the annual salary review in the future will be revised to be held in July, or it will only be postponed by one month in 2022.
According to Jiemian News, Tencent’s major BGs have recently started to conduct half-year performance evaluations, and employees need to summarize and report and self-evaluate their work in the first half of the year.
Another important content of the above email is that the previous binding relationship between rank promotion and salary increase has been cancelled, and whether the employee’s salary is adjusted will depend on more factors. The official caliber is that the adjustment does not mean that the promotion has nothing to do with the salary, but will comprehensively evaluate whether to adjust the salary in the annual salary review, combining multiple factors such as “performance contribution, ability improvement and salary competitiveness”.
Generally speaking, the salary standard of Tencent employees will be fully and scientifically evaluated during the entry stage and in each promotion/salary increase assessment. “Competitiveness of salary” is the result of the long-term formal evaluation process of the human resources department. fluctuation.
In this adjustment, the “competitiveness of salary” is emphasized, which has a certain relationship with the topic of “cost-effectiveness” of the Internet companies laying off middle-aged employees, which has attracted much attention recently. This means that even if employees can still contribute to the company’s performance, they may still face pay cuts or layoffs because of the “historical problems” of excessive compensation.
Except for these two adjustments, Tencent has not announced the detailed corresponding changes in performance and salary evaluation standards for this adjustment. Many Tencent employees reported that they felt a little dazed. After the previous cognition of “promotion = salary increase” was broken, practical problems such as how to adjust salary and evaluate half-year performance have not been answered.
However, before this internal email is sent, Tencent’s promotion and salary adjustment in the second half of 2021 has been implemented and will not be affected by this adjustment.
