Berthe Morisot was a French painter and a member of the Paris Impressionist scene. In 1874 she participated in the first exhibition of the “unrecognized” Impressionists, including Paul, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Augus Te Renoir and Alfred Heathley et al. From 1874 to 1886 Morisot participated in all but one of the next eight Impressionist exhibitions. She was married to Eugene Manet, the younger brother of her friend and colleague Edouard Manet.

The painting shows one of Morisot’s younger sisters, Edma. Edma was sitting in a chair by an open window, contemplating something. It looks like she’s staring at a Japanese fan, but is her attention there? Morisot’s use of pastel colors clearly captures the contemplative mood.

Side note: Speaking of family…see how Morisot’s daughter , Julie Manet , became an Impressionist muse in the eyes of her mother, uncle and many others. <3
