And because of the spread of this rumor, people began to panic buying, and the final result, of course, was a real shortage of toilet paper. At first glance, this may seem simple, a so-called “prophetic self-fulfilling” mechanism, but the efficient way it works is somewhat complicated. Each of the participants reasoned this way: “I’m not naive and I’m not stupid, I know it in my heart, and there’s more than enough toilet paper in the store; but maybe some people, both naive and stupid, believe these rumors, And act accordingly, so they start buying like crazy, and in the end, there must be a real shortage; so, even if I know that I have plenty of toilet paper, it’s always wise to go to the store and buy some more!” Importantly, the person we assume to be naive to believe the rumor does not even have to actually exist: it is enough to assume that he exists for such an outcome to occur in reality. The one who is empty-handed in the end is the one who insists on the truth. He muttered to himself, “I know it’s just a rumour, I know there’s plenty of toilet paper” and acted accordingly…
Likewise, in the realm of ideology, don’t we all play some kind of role? We all have the “superpower” of “guessing other people’s thoughts”, and at the same time we have to carefully play ourselves “as we should be” and carry out the “assume of knowing” movement. If we bring Dongguo and Xiguo into this family, we will find that the family has already appeared as a symptom of the whole country – the contradiction between the East and the West will be mediated, just like a family organized by a spy father and a killer mother through the mediation of their daughters generally. Judging from the form of a fictional family, it is naturally wrong to accuse this so-called hypocritical family from the perspective of a moral guardian, because the family is built around the gap and around a sublime object.
