The distress and adjustment of working from home

During normal office hours, I have a good habit (I think so) that I never read Dingding messages after work . Unless there is something important and urgent, I will not check or reply to any messages on Dingding after work, of course. , I also don’t message colleagues after work. I insist on this habit, in order to let myself really be in off-time , completely separate work and life, so as to avoid the mutual influence between the two, resulting in the failure of both sides.

This is the same as my insistence on doing intermittent journaling – recording what I am doing and what to do next in the form of timestamps. After I am done, I stamped a timestamp and briefly summarized it, which is equivalent to ending the last thing completely. The advantage of this is that you can pay close attention to what you are currently doing, and you can completely empty it after the end, without affecting the next plan.

However, my productivity was very low during the time I worked from home . The most obvious manifestation was that I read less. I used to spend more than half an hour reading every day. What bothered me even more was that I became depressed, because the efficiency became low, and the unfinished work was backlogged in my mind, so that I was so anxious that I had no intention to do other things.

When the second round of working from home is approaching, I have to reflect and summarize the reasons for two aspects:

  • Self-reason : Thinking that there is plenty of time at home, it can be delayed to complete, resulting in the plan being disrupted;
  • External factors : There are many online messages, frequent communication, frequent interruption of deep work, and low efficiency.

Therefore, the crux of the problem is boundary processing :

  • working hours and rest time;
  • Work communication and deep work.

For the first item, in order to avoid blurring the boundary between work and rest time, you need to limit your work time. In order to improve efficiency, you should plan your schedule in advance, and then strictly implement it. You can get off work at the right time, so as to avoid long-term mental stress and affect the quality of rest.

For the second item, separate the deep work cycle from the matters that need to be communicated , and focus on the things to be communicated. After finishing the collaboration that does not require your own deep participation, enter the deep work cycle, show your focus state during this period, and inform colleagues about the news. Reply afterward.

The solution is simple, just do it without knowing the suffering. I plan to try it during the next quarantine period, and look forward to it.
