” The Ladder of Divine Ascent “, also known as “Ladder to Heaven”, is a 12th-century icon from the most important and famous birthplace of the icon: St. Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai.
This icon represents the theological teachings of St. John Climacus, also known as “Ladder John”, who described the Christian life as a ladder with 30 steps. Cremachus’ treatise on asceticism gained great popularity and made its author famous in the church. It is aimed at hermits and monks and describes the means by which the highest degree of religious perfection can be attained. It is divided into 30 sections (steps) to commemorate the 30 years of the life of Christ, presenting a picture with all the virtues, and contains a large number of allegorical and historical influences, mainly from monastic life, and showing the commandments in practical application .
At the icon, we see monks tempted by demons and encouraged by angels, while at the top of the ladder, John Climachus is welcomed by Jesus. Demons attack and try to pull monks down the ladder, or hit them with arrows to knock them off the ladder. Some monks almost reached the top, but were lured by demons and fell. The work also features an open mouth, representing the devil devouring a monk who has fallen from a ladder.
