UPS shopping
Before this, I really didn’t expect that UPS uninterruptible power supply still has some knowledge, such as battery capacity, volume size, number of sockets, and number of functions. Among them, the most important thing that needs to be carefully studied is equipment compatibility. Because I use Unraid as the main system, and then virtualize a black Synology to use as a NAS, if the UPS is only compatible with Unraid or Synology, there will be problems. A UPS that does not work normally is equivalent to a waste of money. Protects against tripping events of a few minutes, not for extended outages when no one is home
I browsed the official forum of Unraid, and in the UPS discussion posts, I recommended the APC brand of UPS. According to the experience of the predecessors, I also plan to buy products of this brand▽▼
▲△APC has four series of backup power supplies, BP, BK, BX, BR PRO, BX and BR PRO series are relatively high-end, and the battery capacity is also large, which is the most recommended configuration; BP and BK have fewer functions, but cost-effective higher, within my budget

UPS settings
Although UPS supports a certain degree of plug-and-play, my Unraid+Virtual Synology DIY machine still needs some manual configuration. The following will be divided into three parts to describe, namely, the setting methods in Windows system, Unraid system, and Synology DSM system
Windows settings
APC’s UPS has a dedicated personal management software, which can be downloaded from the official website. The name is PowerChute Person Edition (PCPE). Unfortunately, it only supports the Windows version▽▼
When installing PCPE, you need to connect Windows and UPS first, as long as you use the USB to LAN cable in the box, one end is connected to the management LAN port of UPS, and the other end is connected to the USB port of Windows. Otherwise, you will receive such a pop-up reminder▽▼
Let me complain first, the software UI of PCPE is also too retro, as if back in 2000. Due to the first day of use, the UPS status in PCPE is incomplete. For example, the energy usage record will have accurate data after a day of normal operation▽▼
The purpose of my PCPE installation is actually to adjust the voltage setting. The default is that the backup UPS will only intervene when the AC mains voltage drops below 160 volts or rises above 278 volts. I think this range is a bit too wide for Shenzhen’s power grid. It is basically impossible to encounter it. Manually adjust it to the minimum range that can be set, that is, lower than 196 volts and higher than 256 volts▽▼
In this way, the Windows part is completed, and then we go to Unraid to set it up. We need to unplug the USB to LAN cable just mentioned from Windows and connect it to the Unraid machine.
Unraid settings
The Unraid system comes with a function called UPS Settings, which can be connected to related functions of UPS, such as automatic shutdown. But since I am a DIY machine of Unraid+Virtual Synology, if I want to use one UPS to control two platforms, I need a third-party plug-in support, this plug-in is “NUT Network UPS Tools”, we can search in “APPS” and Install▽▼
I won’t go into details on how to solve the problem of not being able to connect to “APPS”. There are a lot of tutorials on the Internet. However, after connecting to “APPS”, due to domestic network reasons, the plug-in may not be installed smoothly. Here we can use a tricky method to achieve it. First click on the plug-in to install normally, and in the pop-up window we can see the address of the file being downloaded▽▼
As you can see, they are all files in the githubusercontent site. Just copy these URLs to a browser that can “normally surf the Internet” and open them, and they can be downloaded. And friends who have network problems don’t have to worry, I will pack these files into a network disk, and you can get them by replying “UPS” on my official account. After downloading the file, open the Unraid system U disk folder, find the directory in the picture, and put it in order ▽▼
Then execute the installation again, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that Unraid directly skipped the download and executed the installation▽▼
After the installation is complete, we come to the “SETTINGS” page, find the “NUT Settings” function under “System Settings”, which is the button of the battery ICON, and click to enter. I don’t need to worry about the options in it for the time being. Let’s directly find the “AUTODETECT” button and click it to let the plug-in detect the UPS for automatic configuration. I forgot to take a screenshot before the automatic configuration, so it’s not clear whether this function is useful. Just follow along ▽▼
Then change “UPS Mode” to “Netserver”, that is, network server mode, which is very important; “Shutdown Mode” can be changed according to your own needs, whether it is “battery running time” or “battery remaining power”; modified After “Shutdown Mode”, the corresponding threshold option below will change, just adjust the required value; then set “Turn off ups after shutdown” to “Yes”, so that Unraid will automatically turn off the UPS power after shutdown; finally, it is the top “Start Network UPS Tools service” of the “Start Network UPS Tools service”, set to “Yes”, you can open the “NUT” function▽▼
The “Display Settings” below can be opened on demand. After opening, the remaining battery power and charging power of the UPS will be displayed at the bottom of the page. It feels useful or not. “NUT Details” can display the relevant information of UPS, such as brand and model, etc. Let’s see for yourself▽▼
After the configuration is complete, you can see the relevant dynamics of the UPS in the “DASHBOARD” of Unraid, and the battery capacity and estimated power supply time are all clear▽▼
The most complicated Unraid setup part is also completed, only the last step in Synology is left, and it will be over soon
DSM settings
It is very simple in Synology, we can finish it with a single picture, first go directly to the DSM “Control Panel”, find “Hardware and Power” in “System”, and switch to the “Uninterruptible Power System” tab. First tick “Enable UPS support”; then fill in the IP address of your Unraid management page in “Internet UPS Server”, for example, “10.0. Tick ”Time” and set a time shorter than your Unraid shutdown time, for example, I directly 30 seconds ▽▼
My virtual group is a mirror image of 3617, and the DSM system version is 6.1.7. If you find that the screenshots are different, it means that the DSM version is inconsistent. You can adjust it yourself

UPS is the last step to play with NAS, and it is also a powerful means to ensure data security. It is recommended that everyone buy one. Although I bought APC’s BK650M2-CH, in fact, the products of any brand are similar. As long as the compatibility is OK and the appearance of the product you like, it is fine, and there is no need to copy some master’s homework. The most important thing here is the settings after purchase and installation. Effective settings can give full play to the full value of the UPS, not just tens of minutes of extra batteries.
