The Linux Foundation, Amazon AWS, Meta, Microsoft, and TomTom have announced a new open map project, Overture Maps, creating the new Overture Maps Foundation. Overture Maps seeks to integrate data from the open map project OpenStreetMap, as well as new map data contributed by project members, using computer vision and AI/ML to create a living digital record of the physical world. Overture Maps intends to form a complementary relationship with the OpenStreetMap project. Overture’s data will be provided to the OpenStreetMap community under a compatible open data license. Overture members are also encouraged to contribute data directly to OpenStreetMap. The Overture Foundation was not too happy with OpenStreetMap’s data structure, feeling that its map data lacked the structure needed to easily build map products. At present, Google Maps occupies a dominant position in the map market, but the search giant has also greatly increased the API price, which has increased by more than 100 times in a year. Uber, the ride-hailing app, disclosed in its IPO filings that it paid tens of millions of dollars to Google Maps. Overture intends to challenge Google Maps and plans to release the first dataset in the first half of 2023.
