When I first wondered what kind of experience it is to learn to fly, I found that generally speaking, when evaluating a pilot’s ability, the number of flying hours is a commonly used parameter. I was very surprised at first, does flying more mean flying well? Or why don’t we like to use how many years of experience to evaluate like our country?
Later, I found that although this evaluation system is very simple, it has its charm. Just like we often say that a programmer has 10 years of work experience, but in my opinion, some people’s ten years of experience is not as good as some people’s one year of experience. I wrote an explosive article called ” Why do some people gain your ten years of work experience in one year?” ” is discussing this issue. Of course, in that article I emphasized the difference between actively working hard and passively killing time. In any group, if you work hard, you will find that your efficiency is a hundred times that of most people who spend time passively.
However, there are many times when the problem is only in terms of time investment, it is already a very serious problem.
When I was in junior high school, because of my good grades, I was assigned by the teacher to tutor a certain “poor student”. I was not a particularly hard-working person, and I may be simple, so I didn’t resist, but made friends with this poor student seriously. However, I found that he is actually a very smart person.
We were all playing Nintendo’s Famicom at the time. Although my family didn’t buy it for me, my classmates borrowed it from time to time and played with it.
I’m the kind of typical handicapped party, playing Mario and the like is very average. And after helping him once, he invited me to his house to play. We played Mario, Contra, and I said we were tired of it. Do you have any other cassettes? He said yes, it’s very fun, the Three Kingdoms game. As he spoke, he took out the Japanese cassette of “Swallowing the World” and inserted it.
At the beginning of the introduction of the plot, I can still understand a few Chinese characters. Later, when I arrived at the operation interface, many of them were pseudonyms. I was at a loss. What did I say? He said it was in Japanese. I said, why are you so good, you can even understand Japanese.
He said that he made a mistake when he bought the cassette. He wanted to buy a Chinese one, but only after he bought it did he realize that it was in Japanese. But he liked this game very much, so he continued to play it. Now that he knows what these Japanese words mean, he is very comfortable playing. I watched him play in a daze for a long time. Back home, very depressed.
At that time, my grades were very good, so I was very popular in the class, and the teachers liked me, even though I often didn’t do my homework. I was also a little smug, thinking that I must be smarter than the average classmate. Teachers and classmates also said the same.
However, that time, I suddenly found that poor students were smarter than me. Later, when I helped him with counseling, I deliberately tried to understand this problem. I found that he couldn’t answer some questions. It really had nothing to do with being smart or not, but that he didn’t listen to the teacher at all in class. However, he is very smart. If you tell him how this thing works, he will definitely be able to do it right.
For many years later, when I have been in contact with many people, I have discovered that, of course, there are differences in intelligence. But many people with poor academic performance are not intellectual problems. They may not like to listen to the lectures in class, they like to be distracted, or they may not be interested in what is said in class.
When I was in college, I also changed from a top student to a scumbag, and the problems I encountered were very similar. When I was in college, I already had my own computer, and I was obsessed with writing programs to solve problems that existed and did not exist in the world of code. All university subjects no longer appeal to me. I can sleep soundly in math class, and I can sleep soundly in physics class. Naturally, the exam will be crushed. Once I took the high math test, I felt that my intelligence was greatly tested, because I couldn’t do 80% of the questions. But later, I figured it out, it wasn’t a matter of intellect. Because of these formulas, how to find the derivative is not because my brain is too stupid to understand. It’s just that I didn’t go to class, and I never heard of it. If I can rely on my cleverness to deduce it during the exam, wouldn’t I be a god? So I survived for 30 minutes, and when I could hand in the papers, I handed in almost a hundred papers and walked away.
My daughter’s academic performance has also been poor in the past two years. At first I also doubted her IQ, obviously she may not be as smart as me. But after tutoring her homework a few times, I found that, in fact, the courses in junior high school and high school really do not have such high requirements for IQ. Her problem is that she didn’t listen much. She seems to have no knowledge of the knowledge points that the teacher taught for 40 minutes in a class. I had no clue about my homework, but after I told her for 5 minutes, she understood and the topic was solved. However, I can’t keep an eye on her in class, so I can’t solve the problem of her not listening. So she missed the knowledge points taught by the teacher all the time. As a result, the homework is not done well, and the test scores are naturally unsatisfactory.
She is a very serious and stubborn child. Because she likes to play with mobile phones, she often delays her homework, so she often starts to do her homework seriously at 10:11 in the evening, but at that time she often has to write until 2-3 o’clock. When doing homework, I also like to be distracted.
And as I said before, when I was in school, I often didn’t do my homework, because I also like to play this and that procrastinating, procrastinating until very late, writing for an hour, and at 12 o’clock, I have to go to bed, I would rather tomorrow I was scolded by the teacher for not handing in my homework. Or frantically make up homework in the morning self-study and the first class. But these never affect my grades, because I listen carefully in class, and even if I don’t do my homework, I can guarantee that I will get it right in the exam.
My daughter, on the other extreme, is obsessed with finishing her homework. I can’t finish my homework, and I don’t go to bed at 3 or 4 o’clock. It happened once or twice that she made up her homework too late and slept all day in class the next day. The teacher called us directly.
So I communicated with her, and I said that the purpose of doing homework is to learn knowledge. If you have no energy to go to class the next day, then you can’t finish the homework, or you can communicate with the teacher and hand it in a day later. But she can agree with me in spirit, but in practice she is still completely the same.
All this is to say, since I was very young, I have discovered that many people’s poor grades have nothing to do with intelligence, and they simply don’t listen to them in class. Then how to write homework after class, how to make up for tutoring is difficult to improve. When I was in my 40s, I saw examples again from my daughter. This essentially means that under normal circumstances, if you study hard and devote enough time to studying, you can definitely learn well.
A basic principle is that where you invest your time, you can get what kind of results. Of course, there are differences in talents, learning methods, abilities, and so on. But in general, the more time you have, the better the result is often good.
My income over the years has come from the WeChat public account the most. The reason is that in 2015, I insisted on daily updates for a year and wrote 200,000 words of articles. Then I have been eating my laurels until now.
I have worked in the software industry for 20 years, which of course comes from the fact that I spend a lot of time reading documents and writing codes, and I can write more than 10 languages.
I recently wrote an awesome subtitle generation Mac app called TinyStudio. However, I have never done Mac development before. The reason is very simple, because I insisted on doing Mac development in the past year, and slowly got out of practice.
My two Youtube accounts now have 30,000 followers, although I haven’t updated them recently. In fact, I started to do YouTube seriously in 2008. It’s been a long time now. I probably found some ideas because I continued to make hundreds of videos.
I have even played The Legend of Zelda for two generations. Breath of the Wild has 190 hours, and Tears of the Kingdom has more than 200 hours.
The times are generally fair. This is of course quite obvious. I really don’t have a particularly profound truth, but in the past few years, I have continuously discovered many simple truths, which need to be practiced in a lifetime to understand.
Writing these things today, of course, does not mean that people have no individual differences, no differences in IQ. But many times, for ordinary people, what you fight most of the time is not this, but investing time. The problem for most people is that they only have 59 points in many abilities. If you invest enough time, you can get at least 90 points. Maybe some talent is needed to reach 99 points, but the problems most people encounter are far from the time when they need to fight for talent.
