The second anniversary of joining Microsoft Cambridge Research (Senior Software Engineer)

Counting, by the end of this month, I will be joining Microsoft Research Cambridge (MSRC = Microsoft Research Cambridge) for the second anniversary. I now go to the office two to three days a week. The colleagues working in MSRC (Engineer and Researcher) basically work in a 50/50 way, and 50% of the time is remote work (Remote Working, WFH Work from home ).

I drive to work , 20 minutes one way, but sometimes I can drive for 30 minutes if the road is congested. In the morning, I drive my baby to school first, then go to the company, and pick up the baby at 3 pm, and then go home , and then work for a while, sometimes at night and in the middle of the night I will work sporadically for a while (I am more focused in the middle of the night).

The company provides employees with free parking spaces on the basement of the company building. After the COVID-19 pandemic , because Microsoft adopted the Hybrid working method, these few parking spaces can be shared. Employees need to use the parking spaces 2 weeks to 2 days in advance Apply. But basically there are vacancies, and you can even use the car tomorrow and apply again today. Of course, I will apply as early as possible, probably directly applying for the parking space after 2 weeks.

When I was in the Amazon next door, I had to apply for the parking space downstairs. I filled out the application form when I first entered Amazon, and I didn’t queue up when I left the job, because those parking spaces were given priority to those who lived there. Far away employees, and it’s not free, it costs more than 80 pounds a month.

I have explained in detail about the company cafeteria here , mainly because I like to eat Microsoft’s fried eggs in the morning. Every time I go to the company for a meeting before 9:30, I will go to have breakfast first, and the coffee and fruit are free. Three eggs for breakfast cost £1.86.

The best part of being in the Institute is that no Oncall is required. It’s easier because there’s no direct-to-customer product. The main content of the work is to realize the ideas of colleagues (researchers).

When I was at AWS , Oncall was required about every 6 to 7 weeks, and all SDEs (Software Development Engineer software engineers) needed it. Each Oncall takes 24/7. As long as the alarm sounds, it takes 15 minutes to go online to respond + find out the reason, otherwise the alarm will be paged to your manager. If your manager doesn’t respond, the manager’s manager will be paged until Linen’s CEO “brother-in-law” (Jeff Bezos).

It’s been two years, what’s next? I don’t know, maybe I’ll hang around for a few more years and try to see if I can get promoted, but it’s really quite difficult to get promoted in a big factory, so let’s hang around…
