In China, the earliest Shareware sharing software model emerged around 2000~2010. Back then, many courageous young people, mostly born in the 70s and 80s, resigned and started their own businesses with the help of the Shareware model, earning their first pot of gold in life.
Around 2010, with the interest in the mobile Internet, the traditional Shareware desktop software declined, and the China Software Software Center and Taiwan Software King, which focused on Shareware payment, also closed down one after another. Many old SWer people said: Shareware is dead. But I don’t think so.
As the earliest personal paid software model, the Shareware sharing software model is extremely influential in the software industry, and it has created a new era of independent developers entrepreneurship. Although many people think that Shareware is dead, few people even claim to be SWer anymore. But its spirit and core are still there, but new terms such as Solopreneur, ISV, independent developer, and individual entrepreneur are used to refer to this group. The spirit of the original Shareware is still alive and well among these groups.

In the past, independent developers often could only focus on the development and dissemination of niche applications. But now, with the popularization of mobile payment and the increase of copyright awareness, digital payment and subscription payment have begun to take root in the hearts of the people. With the help of current cloud computing and AI artificial intelligence, individual developers can easily manage and control more computing resources, and at the same time be more flexible, especially in the current popular fields of mobile applications, Web App, Web 3.0, and AI artificial intelligence , the boundaries of independent developers are gradually disappearing, and more and more post-90s and post-00s have also joined this group, and their status has been greatly improved.
It’s the best of times for indie developers.
