This article is the reading notes of “Cognitive Awakening: Unlocking the Power of Self-Change”

Everyone has their own cognitive system, and their ability to solve problems often comes from their own cognitive system.

Since most people have been nurtured by exam-oriented education since childhood, the academic knowledge system (concepts, formulas, principles, and cases) is often definite and universal, and can be learned and referenced by all; so most people want to go The shortcut is to find the most authoritative and certain cognitive system to study and copy.

But the cognitive system is difficult to copy, and it is not necessary.

We can’t take “finding the optimal cognitive system and learning it comprehensively” as the standard and ignore the difference between the cognitive system of others and our actual needs, because the purpose of personal growth is no longer “knowing and understanding”, but “judging and understanding”. choose”.

Therefore, in the field of personal growth, there is no optimal, most certain, and most authoritative cognitive system, only the most suitable cognitive system for our current state.

So, how to enrich your own cognitive system?

For example: read “Cognitive Awakening”, other similar books, sharing by masters, etc. The popular way of learning the cognitive system of the masters is often:

  1. Some people are keen to talk about concepts, and they open their mouths and close their mouths to be a model of so-and-so. It seems that they have a complete knowledge system when they know this; (for example, I am talking about “touch learning method” here today)

  2. Some people are relatively diligent. They read books and draw mind maps, and are delighted that they can sort out a “perfect” structural framework;

  3. Some people learn from others’ strong points, and know the knowledge system of others well, and they can even integrate with each other, feeling that they see through everything.

It’s just that beauty is beautiful, and reality is reality. After a lot of tossing, they found that they still had many problems, and they made little progress. Except for knowing, everything was business as usual. At this point, the [positioning anxiety] mentioned by the author in the first chapter is easy to appear.

The author also mentioned that there are two reasons for anxiety: want to do a lot of things at the same time, and want to see the effect immediately. Therefore, the improvement of cognition itself is not achieved overnight.

Here, the author proposes the touch learning method, that is, by finding the “most touching” points during reading and linking them with their existing knowledge system, transform and apply them. We do not need and cannot hold on to finding the optimal knowledge system to learn and solve problems once and for all.

Don’t care about the completeness of the form, just learn what touches you, even if there is only one point or one sentence, it is worthwhile.

Don’t be in a hurry, human ability cannot be developed by leaps and bounds, and it can only expand outward little by little on the existing basis, and the best area for expansion is at the edge of the comfort zone. The knowledge on the edge of the self-perception circle is most closely related to our actual needs, so it is easier for us to be touched.

In the end, the truth of building a personal cognitive system: smash the cognitive systems of each family, only take the points or blocks that touch you the most, and then splicing them into your own cognitive network.

Just touching is not enough. Not all touches are effective. The purpose of improving cognition is still “judgment and choice”. So, for the points that touch us:

  1. Try to reinterpret new knowledge in your own language, which will prompt your original body of knowledge to respond to the new knowledge.

  2. Try to extract knowledge smoothly when you need it. Knowledge that cannot be extracted is pseudo-touching.

  3. Try to practice or use this knowledge regularly in your life, because practice is the ultimate way to make strong connections.

If it can’t be done, it means that it may be “pseudo-touch”, and “pseudo-touch” is far from our real needs, so it’s better to give up, don’t be obsessed. When we really need and can handle it, we will be touched again.
