USTR identified 39 online marketplaces and 33 brick-and-mortar marketplaces on its 2022 list of “Notorious Markets” that are alleged to have engaged in or facilitated large-scale trademark counterfeiting or piracy. “The Notorious Markets List is an important tool to urge action by the private sector and our trading partners to combat these harmful practices,” USTR said Tuesday.

Among other things, USTR continues to identify WeChat’s e-commerce ecosystem as one of the largest platforms for counterfeit goods in China. According to the report, WeChat’s e-commerce ecosystem facilitates the distribution and sale of counterfeit products to users across the WeChat platform.

Other Chinese platforms included in the list include online marketplaces AliExpress, Baidu Wangpan, DHgate, Pinduoduo and Taobao, which were previously included in the list. In addition, seven brick-and-mortar markets within China were also included in the list. These brick-and-mortar markets are increasingly using brick-and-mortar stores to support online counterfeit sales, according to USTR.

In early 2022, USTR added e-commerce sites operated by Tencent and Alibaba to its list of “notorious markets.” Tencent said at the time that it strongly opposed the decision.
