We gathered from a few colleagues in the editorial department about that particular jumping-off point that allowed them to see an alternate universe, including Korean dramas, rap albums, and a studio.
01 Rap music, and poetry

On the 13th, Kendrick Lamar’s new album is out.
It’s hard to introduce this rapper to friends who haven’t heard of singing, and I have to give the label that is most often affixed to his name: the only rapper to win a Pulitzer Prize.
In 2018, Kendrick Lamar’s album “DAMN.” won the Pulitzer Prize for Music, which in the past has only been awarded to classical or jazz.
The jury wrote in their comments: “The album contains a series of songs that record the true expression of the folk, the rhythm and enthusiasm, and show the complexity of modern African American life, which is unforgettable. Like other rappers, his songs are often about himself, but the difference is that instead of focusing on “cars,” “tickets,” and “girls,” he dabbles in broader issues, he asked African-Americans. survival, discussing gender relations, confronting the fears instilled in him by a childhood of gang violence and extreme poverty… At the same time, his language is fictional, even poetic.

02 Korean drama, not only romantic love
“My Emancipation Diary”

It is difficult to summarize the main plot of “My Emancipation Diary” in one or two sentences. This drama is more of a “description”: the three brothers and sisters of the Lian family who mock themselves as “protein people” – Miura City where they live, such as Our suburbs of Beijing, like egg whites, envelop the “yolk” Seoul – commuting, going to work, meeting friends, eating and chatting, falling in love… One of the few extraordinary senses comes from the mysterious man who suddenly broke in. There is no interlocking plot, but it makes people want to watch it all the time, fall into their grief, and gain a kind of strength. This viewing experience is more often found in arthouse films (if you have to distinguish it that way), and rarely in TV series aimed at a wider audience. One of the reasons why the most realistic and daily life can be written in a fascinating manner is that the screenwriter no longer strives to make the characters serve the plot, and has space to reach into people’s consciousness, or the depths of their souls. Ordinary people also have rich and delicate feelings and thinking about existence, and looking directly at this “self” is the beginning of self-liberation.
For example, the eldest sister’s show of love is to “catch the head of her beheaded husband” without hesitation; the second brother’s breakup is because he is afraid to confirm from the other party that “I am not a good person”; the younger sister’s confession is bold Say “please worship me and fill my heart”. I also wrote about love. If I rummaged through my memory, I would be surprised at the transformation of Korean dramas. But Korean dramas that have gone through this stage have begun to accumulate more and more profoundly. Extensive social care is put into the plot, and it dares to respond to changes and problems in the country’s politics, economy, society and culture. When it comes to “My Emancipation Log”, we can see the creator’s reflection on modernity, the freedom of expression, and the penetrating understanding of human beings.

These were once the most precious things in movies and the original intention of A24.
