Tsinghua professor Liu Shixia won the IEEE VIS 2022 Visualization Technology Achievement Award

The first Asian to win the Visualization Technology Achievement Award.

On October 18, 2022, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Visualization Conference (IEEE VIS) announced the two winners of this year’s Visualization Technology Achievement Award: Professor Liu Shixia from Tsinghua University and Professor Valerio Pascucci from the University of Utah. There are 20 winners of the award this year and 2 winners. Liu Shixia is the first Asian and the second Chinese winner of IEEE VIS so far.

Scholars who have also won the Visualization Technology Achievement Award in the past include Daniel Weiskopf, a professor of computer science at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, Jean-Daniel Fekete, a French computer scientist, and Anders Ynnerman, a professor of scientific visualization and director of the Department of Media and Information Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The first Chinese to win the Technical Achievement Award was Kwan-Liu Ma , a Chinese-American computer scientist born in Taipei. Kwan-Liu Ma He went to the United States for further studies in 1983, and completed his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in computer science at the University of Utah. He used to be a scientist at the Institute of Computer Science and Engineering Applications (ICASE) at NASA’s Langley Research Center. He is currently at the University of California, Davis. Distinguished professor of computer science, his research interests include visualization, computer graphics, human-computer interaction, and high-performance computing. Received the 2013 IEEE VIS Visualization Technology Achievement Award for pioneering work in large-scale data visualization and new visualization techniques.

Professor Shixia Liu received the Visualization Technology Achievement Award for his significant impact on academia and industry in text visual analysis and visualization-based explainable machine learning .

Liu Shixia, is currently a professor at the School of Software, Tsinghua University, and holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Computational Mathematics from Harbin Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. Appointed as IEEE Fellow, concurrently serving as editorial board member of CCF A-class journal Artificial Intelligence, editorial board member of IEEE Transactions on Big Data and ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems. He has published more than 60 papers in ACM/IEEE Trans and CCF Class A conferences, and obtained more than 50 authorized patents. His main research interests are interpretable machine learning, text visual analysis and text mining.

Valerio Pascucci The professor received the Visualization Technology Achievement Award for his pioneering contributions to the visualization and analysis of topological data .

Valerio Pascucci , born in Rome, Italy on May 13, 1967, holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Rome I, and a Ph.D. in computer science from Purdue University. and data analysis group leader, adjunct professor of computer science at UC Davis and general chair of the IEEE Visualization Conference, current professor at the University of Utah School of Computing and founding director of the Center for Extreme Data Management Analysis and Visualization ( CEDMAV ) at the University of Utah . Valerio Pascucci’s research interests include big data management and analysis, progressive multi-resolution techniques in scientific visualization, discrete topology, geometric compression, computer graphics, computational geometry, geometric programming, and solid modeling .
