Multiple Twitter users reported trying to modify their usernames or profiles to include links to the decentralized microblogging service Mastodon. The result returned an error message, “Account update failed: Description is considered malware.” Some users reported that they posted their own Mastodon links in tweets, but were warned by Twitter that they contained “sensitive content” and restricted their display. After Elon Musk took control of Twitter, a large number of users flocked to Mastodon. In just two weeks, it added 1 million new users. Musk has waved a big stick in the past few days, blocking all accounts that disclose personal real-time location on the grounds of “direct personal safety risk”. In Musk’s eyes, the Mastodon instance could become a growing threat to Twitter.
