Twitter has filed a legal challenge to the Indian government’s order requiring the social media company to block the accounts and personal tweets of some users in the country. In recent weeks, Twitter has blocked tweets from a prominent Indian journalist and founder of a popular fact-checking website in India. Together, the two have more than 2 million Twitter followers. Twitter called India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s order for the company to block tweets “showing an overuse and anachronism” of power. Twitter said it filed an application for judicial review of the order with the High Court in Karnataka, where the company is registered, on Tuesday. Under India’s Information Technology Act, Twitter employees in the country could face up to seven years in prison and fines if they fail to comply with the order.
