WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 (Reuters) – Two Earth-imaging satellites developed by Airbus SE were destroyed when the rocket carrying them failed shortly after liftoff on Tuesday night, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Arianespace SAS, which operates the rocket, said on Wednesday that one of the rocket’s engines experienced a drop in pressure. That prompted officials overseeing flight safety to issue an order to destroy the satellite in accordance with standard operating procedure. The two destroyed satellites were supposed to complete a constellation of Airbus satellites called Pléia des Neo, which Airbus has said will provide customers with complex images of Earth. According to the company, two satellites currently in orbit are already transmitting images.
