U.S. delays real-name identification for airline passengers until 2025

After the 9/11 attacks in 2001, the US Senate unanimously passed the Real Name Act to make it harder for would-be hijackers to forge their identities. However, the implementation of the real-name system has been delayed continuously because the identification systems of the states in the United States are not complete. Proof of identity for Americans relies primarily on driver’s licenses. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said this week that the deadline for the implementation of the real-name identification system for air passengers has been pushed back from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. The continued delay of the real-name system may also prove that it is not necessary.
